Metal Detectors and Body Piercing

Posted on June 26, 2008 in Latest News

One very frequently asked question with regards to body piercing is “Do piercing set off metal detectors”

The answer to this question is Yes and No. Some people have had no problem absolutely when traveling with their piercing whereas some had big time problems, which were embarrassing and frustrating. Some even had to go to the extent of removing them in the airport.

Post 9/11 securities have tightened greatly at various airports.

One would surely feel distressed to remove piercing done in their private parts. And missing one’s flight due to this reason is ridiculous. Though many have claimed that piercing don’t set off detectors, others have faced several issues at airports. There have been instances where women have been forced to remove their nipple rings and men are made to zip out their underwear to check out if the ring on their private part is genuine and not a bomb.

Some on the other hand believe that body piercings are like earrings. One wouldn’t have to remove their earrings while going through a metal detector. Similarly one need not remove their small piercings, which is done in two or three places.

To be on the safer side and to avoid embarrassing situations it would always be safe to remove off a piercing, which may put you in a embarrassing situation (ones done on private parts). And other piercings, which are done on your face or tummy, need not be removed, i.e. if you have no issue baring them in front of the security.
