Ear lobe piercing according to experts is said to be 5000 years old. This was proved with the excavation of a 5000-year-old mummy in the Atlantic glaciers in 1991.

In ancient days people would consider ears to be an inlet for evil spirits and they believed that only metal helped in preventing the evil get inside their body. So, for this purpose they would pierce their ears.

Also, earlier sailors who were found dead on the banks of sea, due to the sinking of a ship, were given a decent Christian burial if they were found with their ears pierced. Also, sailors believed that piercing their ears would help improve eyesight.

Later on in the 18th century with the growth of economy and wealth both men and women displayed ear jewelry. In fact ear jewelry was more prominent amongst men than women.

Also, ear piercing in some cultures is done as a puberty ritual wherein the parents pierce the child’s ears as a sign f dependency.

Though prevalent from earlier times, ear piercing has gained prominence only now. And is considered to be a cool and hep thing.
