Body piercing, though a contemporary mark of style, has existed in some cultures as a form of tradition.

In many African tribes, Ear piercing is common. It is believed that evil spirits will not be able to reside in the body on this account.

In India many cultures propagate piercing of the ears and the nostrils. Most women in India will have their left nostril pierced. It is believed that it has some scientific connection with the woman’s reproductive organs. Most of them also have their ears pierced. Though it is rare to find a male having pierced his body in India, in some states, such as Rajasthan, it is considered a mark of royalty to have the ear pierced with a diamond stud adorning it.

In some cultures it is considered as a mark of beauty to have the navel pierced. In other piercing is done in a public ceremony to announce to the world that the girl child has attained puberty.

It would be interesting to note here that some native American tribes have also considered the rite of tongue piercing to be sacred.
