In the western world, nose rings are a recent fashion. Though new in America, nose piercing has existed in many other countries since long time. It is an important ornament in many countries, India in particular.
About:
Nose piercing is a piercing of skin that forms part of nose. It is normally done for wearing jewellery. There are different kinds of nose piercings, of which nostril piercing is the most common. It is one of the most common forms of piercing after earlobe piercing. It is usually seen in women. It might be a recent development in American fashion, but it is famous in many countries. It is most famous in India.
Nose piercing in India:
In India, nose piercings are not just a fashion statement for women. It is a part of religious sentiment for them. The nose rings were basically brought to India by the Mughals in 16th century. Soon, they became a part of Indian culture. Girls as young as 5-7 years old get their nose pierced. Initially it is painful, but it is fine after sometime when it heals.
According to tradition, nose piercing should mostly be seen in women around 16-18 years of age. That is because it is considered to as the traditional age for marriage in India. Through body piercing, they also honor Parvati, the goddess of marriage. They feel their marriage would be blessed and would last throughout life.
In parts of India, nose rings, once worn are never taken off after the woman is married. The ring is considered to as a sign
of marriage. Today, even young girls wear nose rings. It has become more of a fashion statement then tradition and religious sentiments.
