Nipple Piercing Infection
Nipple piercing is one among the most popular piercings in both men and women. Generally the piercing consists of a ring or a horizontal barbell at the base of nipple. Due to the sensitivity of the area and the location on the body, nipple piercing is at higher risk for infection if proper care is not taken during the process of healing.
Nipple Piercing Infection – Causes:
Infection may develop in all the body piercings if proper aftercare instructions are not followed. One of the major cause of infected nipple piercings is frequent touching. If you play with the nipple piercing, it may introduce bacteria into the piercing area. Other forms of infection may develop if the piercer does not use sterilized equipments. The piercer must wear hand gloves and wash his hands before and after piercing, else disinfect the area before piercing. Bodily fluids like saliva may also trigger infection in the new piercing areas.

- Foul odor
- Green or yellow discharge
These symptoms are based on the severity, but can be the initial symptoms before the occurrence of any bacterial infection. If you are not aware about the signs and symptoms, consult the medical practitioner to determine the infection, if any.

If you observe severe infection, contact the health care provider to avoid permanent damage or spreading the infection. Over the counter antibiotic topical creams and soaking the piercing in the saline solution to treat the infections. You must wash your hands thoroughly before and after treatment.
Nipple Piercing Infection – Preventive Measures:
Following are some of the preventive measures for infected nipple piercing:
- Do not touch the piercing as it can trigger infection.
- You must keep away all the bodily fluids away from the piercing as they introduce external bacteria into the piercing area.
- Proper aftercare instructions must be followed to accelerate the healing process. You must also wear loose clothing and should not rub the piercing frequently.
- You must also wash the sweat after exercise.
