No doubt, body piercing is a great idea for you to look sexy, different and to have your own identification, which you want to show off to others. But, it also involves serious risks and dangers.
What are the risks with body piercing?
The most common risks:
- Allergic reactions (especially to certain kinds of jewelry)
- Keloids (thick scarring at the piercing site)
- Dental damage (swelling and infection of tongue, chipped and broken teeth, choking on loose jewelry etc)
Serious risks Involved with Body Piercing:
- Chances are there that you can get and/or spread a serious infection including HIV, if the piercing equipment hasn’t been sterilized properly.
- Infections in the piercing may also happen later, even after the piercing has healed.
- Many piercing studios use piercing “guns” which cannot be sterilized and this may cause dangers to your health. Be aware of it.
- Metal jewelry in the tongue piercing may damage gums and chip the enamel surface on your teeth.
- In some cases, nipple piercing can damage some of the milk-producing glands in women. This can cause infections or problems later if the woman decides to breast-feed her baby.
- Body piercing can give you serious diseases, some of which may not show up for years.
- Unsterilized needles may lead to serious diseases like liver cancer, HIV, hepatitis B, and the more serious hepatitis C.
- Belly button piercing can cause great pain. You may have trouble sleeping, and clothes sometimes don’t allow enough air to circulate. Moisture collects around the pierced area and makes sores slower to heal.
- The American Dental Association is totally against all piercing in your mouth. They say infection is common, your tongue can swell so large it blocks your airways, and studs, barbells, and hoops can chip your teeth or even choke you if they come loose.
