Safety and Precautions in Body Piercing

Body piercing has gained in popularity over the years with individuals indulging in this form of body modification to enhance their appearances. However while opting for body piercing certain safety and precautionary measures should be taken to minimize the risk of infection and complications after the completion of the body piercing procedure.

While undergoing the body piercing procedure it is imperative for the individual performing the piercing to wear medical gloves throughout the period when the piercing is done. Make sure that their bare hands should not touch your skin or any of the equipment used for piercing.

The use of medical gloves is mandatory on the part of the person performing the piercing if there is a possibility for him to come in contact with blood, blood-infected saliva, or mucous membranes. Disinfected gloves should be employed for piercing purposes. Prior to every piercing the individual performing the piercing must make it certain to clean his hands properly and wear fresh gloves. After the completion of each piercing or prior to exiting the piercing venue, individuals performing the piercing must dispose of the gloves and subsequently clean their hands. Persons doing the piercing must at all times make it a point to clean their hands and change the gloves while piercing each client. Disinfected single use gloves should be used for piercing procedures.

Make sure that the venue where you intend to have your body piercing done has proper autoclave facility for disinfecting reusable equipments. An autoclave is basically a pressure cooker primarily employed in the medical sphere for disinfecting medical equipments. An autoclave should sustain a temperature of at least 246 degrees for 30 minutes so as to completely disinfect the instruments.

Autoclaves must not be dirty and should function properly. They must be habitually maintained and inspected frequently for precise spore termination.

Masks should be put on throughout the piercing process to lessen the degree of infection from air droplet particles emitted from the mouth or nose. Those present in the piercing venue should don masks. However at times the piercing method disallows such use if the customer is not in a position to don a mask when oral piercing is performed. Plastic face guards till the chin or surgical masks and shielding eyewear must be used when there is a likelihood of blood being splashed along with other body fluids. When a mask is employed, it must be changed for piercing every fresh client or while the piercing procedure is on and it happens to be wet. Masks once used should not be worn after they are removed. Face guards or shielding eyewear should be cleaned with a proper cleaning agent and, when it appears to be dirty should be sterilized between uses.
